What is Received Wisdom?

Received Wisdom is pretty much the same thing as Conventional Wisdom, but the term "received" emphasizes the passive (lazy) nature of acquiring this form of information or knowledge.

Received Wisdom is knowledge that is generally considered to be true or factual despite contrary evidence, or knowledge that is accepted without reflection or consideration. The application of Received Wisdom often generates terrifying results. Examples of Received Wisdom include:

• For every cockroach you see, there are thousands more you don't see crawling on and through your dishes, cookware and food.
• You will receive/deserve more respect/attention if you pay a lot of money for your car/home/sunglasses/hydraulic corkscrew.
• Bulletpoints facilitate clear communication.
• We will be greeted as liberators.
• God loves us more than He loves other people. Proof of this includes: we are richer, we are better-educated, we have indoor plumbing, we can get a Whopper With Cheese anywhere in the world and still recognize it as a Whopper With Cheese, and we can drive anywhere we want as fast as we want (except in Atherton).
• The Free Market is entirely self-regulating and would cease to produce Divine results if it was put under any sort of regulatory scrutiny.
• Boys carry their books on the side. Girls and nancy-boys carry their books in front.
